ASBP COMPONENTS

The Armed Services Blood Program is a joint operation that requires coordination among the blood programs of the military Services (Army, Navy, Air Force) and the unified commands. It relies upon many components working together to provide quality blood products to Service members whenever and wherever needed. The following organizations and offices are integral components of the ASBP:

  • Blood Donor Centers (BDCs)
  • Armed Services Whole Blood Processing Laboratories (ASWBPLs)
  • Joint Blood Program Office (JBPO)

  • Expeditionary Blood Transshipment System (EBTS)
  • Blood Product Depots (BPDs)
  • Blood Support Detachments (BSDs)
  • Transfusion Service Facilities (TSFs)

The Armed Services Blood Program Office (ASBPO) manages the blood program for the Department of Defense (DoD). The Armed Services Blood Program was established more than 50 years ago as a joint field operating agency. The office is subject to the authority, direction, and control of the Secretary of Defense (SECDEF) through the Assistant Secretary of Defense [Health Affairs (HA)] and under the operational control of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
