San Diego Blood Donor Center Unveils New Blood Mobile

By Doreen Rekoski, ASBP Blood Donor Recruiter, San Diego, Calif.
The Naval Medical Center San Diego Blood Donor Center in California recently welcomed the newest addition to the blood donor center family — a state-of-the-art blood mobile. The center recently held a ribbon cutting ceremony during which the bus was put on display for staff and visitors to the hospital.

Immediately following the ribbon cutting, the NMCSD Blood Donor Center held a blood drive including resource booths at the event so participants could learn about the Armed Services Blood Program’s mission to save lives of ill or injured service members and their families worldwide.

The first thing those who came to see the new blood mobile noticed is the size and patriotic new exterior — a strong reminder about the ASBP’s mission. The blood mobile operates as both a medical unit and a mobile extension of the NMCSD Blood Donor Center brick and mortar facilities which serve the military community of San Diego County.

In addition, the custom-designed blood mobile features a larger work area for the blood donor center crew and added comfort for the donor. With the two sides of the bus extended, the width of the bus increases from 10 feet to 15 feet, increasing the capability for donor center staff to accomplish their mission.

The NMCSD Blood Donor Center is one of more than 20 ASBP blood donor centers worldwide. All blood collected by the facility directly benefits service members and their families at NMCSD, the Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton and other military treatment facilities around the world.

The donor center also supplies blood and blood products for contingency operations overseas. Every week, shipments go to support operation units in Afghanistan, Iraq and other forward deployed areas. Wherever the military travels, units of blood collected by military blood donor centers such as the NMCSD Blood Donor Center go with them.

About the Armed Services Blood Program
Since 1962, the Armed Services Blood Program has served as the sole provider of blood for the United States military. As a tri-service organization, the ASBP collects, processes, stores and distributes blood and blood products to Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines and their families worldwide. As one of four national blood collection organizations trusted to ensure the nation has a safe, potent blood supply, the ASBP works closely with our civilian counterparts by sharing donors on military installations where there are no military blood collection centers and by sharing blood products in times of need to maximize availability of this national treasure.
